After a career of walking the thin tightrope of immigrant interests and anti-illegal sentiment in Texas, Dewhurst finds himself in a world of hurt.
Dewhurst’s 11th hour “Hail Mary Pass” (more like a “hail Lucifer”) consisted of a radio ad in which Lt. Governor Dewhurst (polling ahead of Cruz in the race for U.S. Senate) claims that Texas Solicitor Attorney General supports granting amnesty. A flat- out, bold-faced lie.
Since he seems so desperate for attention, I am actually worried that Dewhurst may go off the deep end and started tweeting nude photos of himself and posting them on Craigslist.
Cruz has been gaining ground of late in the race. In Texas less than 50% of the vote means runoff. Cruz has been strategizing to get within striking distance so that a runoff would occur (on July 31st), banking on the fact that most of Dewhurst’s voters (who tend to be wealthy Houstonians) would skip the election to honor summertime travel and family commitments. At the same time Cruz, with more grassroots and Tea Party support. could count on his enthusiastic supporters to pull it out in July.
Cruz’s father was a Cuban immigrant – and not just a typical immigrant, he fell victim to the brutal Castro regime and was jailed and tortured. Cruz has long been an opponent of amnesty proposals and has put forth some interesting ideas of how to solve the immigration problems. But none of his solutions support immigrants breaking the laws to get here or to stay here.
Dewhurst has straddled the issue and has practiced a little of the Karl Rove “compassionate conservatism” (translation: “get Latino votes”) and has passed some bills that many view as magnets to reward those who come to Texas illegally.
A lot of honorable Republicans have supported Dewhurst over the years. Dewhurst has been a good Lt. Governor and more importantly a good citizen and philanthropist.
But mark my words, this ad just cost Dewhurst the election.
