The NYT reports that Canada is desperately seeking alternative routes to transport its oil reserves after the Obama debacle of refusing to issue a permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline in the U.S.
The Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, said after the Obama proclamation, that Americans viewed Canada as “one giant national park,” and that he would never again be “held hostage” to (U.S.) politics.
Canada has come up with three new pipeline proposals – one that runs eastward and two towards the west. China stands ready to reap the benefits, investing in Canadian oil sands. Canadian moonbat environmentalists are up in arms –Vancouver and Quebec are knee-deep in the fight, with Vancouver already passing legislation to block the transport of fossil fuels.
“To hasten development of new export routes, the (Canadian) Conservative government is streamlining permit processes by accelerating scheduled hearings and limiting public comment. The government has also threatened to revoke the charitable status of environmental groups that are challenging the projects. And Public Safety Canada, the equivalent of the United States Department of Homeland Security, has classified environmentalists as a potential source of domestic terrorism, adding them to a list that includes white supremacists. “ – New York Times
While China licks its chops, the Canadian Prime Minister is embroiled in a conflict of ridiculous proportions, brought about by the Obama betrayal of yet another ally. Everyone knows that inexpensive fossil fuels and fossil fuel development are the only viable energy wave of the future. Fear of pipeline spills, ignorance of science and technology (oil/natural gas are actually “natural substances”), pretending that carbon dioxide is the most harmful greenhouse gas (water vapor is), are all battles that can be won by reasonable scientific and technological education of the public. Too bad no one is speaking on behalf of the fossil fuels industry.

Of all of Obama's recent exercises of executive power (constitutional or not), his rejection of the Keystone Pipeline could prove to the most significant. If he is re-elected (God forbid), and continues to pander on this issue long enough that the Canadians contract with China and opt for a pipeline to their west coast, the long-term loss of opportunity to move closer to the mythical "energy independence" that purportedly motivates his administration's "investments" in alternative energy technologies (real and imagined) will be virtually incalculable. I place immediate approval of Keystone second only to repeal of Obamacare in the almost inexhaustable list of reasons we need to elect Mitt Romney.
