A Texas District Judge, Steve Thomas ruled that the school district policy barring cheerleaders from quoting scripture on banners at high school football games violated freedom of speech. District Judge Thomas issued an injunction allowing the Kountze High School cheerleaders to continue displaying such banners pending the outcome of a lawsuit about the matter. A trial date has been set for June 24, 2013.
The school district barred the cheerleaders from quoting Bible verses after receiving a complaint from an atheist supported by the Freedom from Religion Foundation. The atheist felt the school was “promoting” Christianity and the suit was filed claiming the banners with scripture violated the First Amendment principal.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Lots of “big dogs” in Texas politics have come out in support of the Kountze cheerleaders including Governor Rick Perry, Texas Senate candidate Ted Cruz, and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.
