Look out ladies – you thought the Obama campaign had you in their crosshairs. Now Hooters, the chicken-wing chain known for slutty waitresses and greasy wings is trying to attract and “please” the womenfolk.
Chief Executive Officer Terry Marks was hired in 2011 to remake the restaurant chain. One of his first actions was to survey why women avoided Hooters, figuring that women typically make the dining out decisions and comprise 51% of theU.S. population.
A couple of guesses: it’s a restaurant named after tits? It is sticky and smells like old beer and old batter? Everything is orange and brown with pictures of half-naked women taped to the wall? The food sucks? The allegedly “beautiful” girls look like nail salon attendant rejects dressed in cut up T-Shirts, padded, push -up bras, panty- style shorts and bizarre dark brown shiny latex hose? Plus it’s expensive. Needless to say, revenues for the chain have decreased 1.8 % according to researcher Technomic Inc. Hooters ranks below Chili’s and Applebee’s for value and food quality.
“There’s an opportunity to broaden the net without putting wool sweaters on the Hooters girls,” Marks said in an interview at his office in Atlanta. “Everything we do should appeal more to women, but nothing we will do will turn men off.”
Marks' solution is to redecorate by enlarging the windows and changing to a “beach shack vibe,” stop charging for a side of fries or bleu cheese dressing, and serving wings that are not frozen.
