The Golf Media has long been reporting a “spat” and “rivalry” between the number one golfer in the world Tiger Woods and PGA tour player from Spain, Sergio García.
Garcia has long been portrayed as the young upstart to Tiger despite the fact that Garcia is less than 5 years younger than Woods and has achieved only 8 tour wins in his career. Tiger has almost ten times as many wins – 78 career wins plus 182 top ten finishes.
Garcia, while a better- than -average tour player, is perhaps best known for his emotional meltdowns and being dumped by Greg Norman’s daughter.
Tiger spanked Garcia at The Players Championship. By the 16th hole, Sergio was tied for the lead with Tiger on Sunday and choked. Tiger Woods kept his shots on land and made two pars. Garcia hit three balls into the water for a quadruple-bogey-double-bogey finish. Garcia later whined that Tiger disturbed him by digging for a club while Garcia was trying to make a shot and that the gallery's applause for Tiger bothered him.
Garcia continued his smack talk after te loss and said about Tiger, “I mean, you can't like everybody. I think that there's people that you connect with and there's people that you don't. You know, it's pretty much as simple as that. I think that he doesn't need me in his life, I don't need him in mine, and let's move on and keep doing what we're doing."
Garcia was later asked in jest if he would have the Tiger round for dinner one night during the upcoming US Open. "We will have him round every night," García said. "We will serve fried chicken."
García left on Tuesday night before he could be asked to clarify his remarks, but later issued a statement through the European Tour, saying: "I apologize for any offence that may have been caused by my comment on stage during The European Tour Players' Awards dinner. I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner.”
The comment that was made wasn’t silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate...— Tiger Woods (@TigerWoods) May 22, 2013
