@HarrietBaldwin Again, to be fair, both parties have had their share of their little perversions.— Ken Wahl (@KenWahl1) August 1, 2013
Not to pick on tireless conservative and supporter of wounded warriors, actor Ken Wahl or his fellow tweeter, Harriet Baldwin, but this Twitter conversation got me thinking. I have said these exact words myself - as have many Republicans. EXACTLY the same thing. To be fair, on our side of the aisle we have had our share of sex scandals as well. After all sex and politics DO mix – separation from family, long hours. Face it, power-driven folks are sexy – and like all people, some succumb to the temptation of illicit sex.
But the reality is that GOP sex scandals historically are VERY different than their Democrat counterparts – the actions and the results. The liberal media TRIED to spin Dem and GOP scandals as similar - on equal moral footing - but with closer examination, they really are not.
Facts are stubborn things. So let’s review.
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas
Clarence Thomas’ confirmation to the United States Supreme Court was hijacked by a liberal push against him – and the lady in question Anita Hill tirelessly testified against Thomas reciting inappropriate action after action - lusty comments, hair on coke cans. Yet, Thomas never had a complaint filed against him and never before (nor since) had any other female make any kind of allegation against him. He did not touch anyone, have an affair, send nude photos, proposition anyone and Hill’s story was never corroborated. Thomas is still married to his wife of 26 years.
Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich
As Speaker of the House, Gingrich fanned the flames of the impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton (for lying under oath about his affair with Monica Lewinsky). Gingrich said that Clinton had reduced the office of the presidency to the "rough equivalent of the 'Jerry Springer' show." Meanwhile Gingrich was having a torrid affair while married to his second wife with a woman 20 years his junior. Later it was reported that Gingrich filed for divorce from his wife while she was hospitalized for cancer treatment. Actually Gingrich’s wife at the time did not have cancer and she was the one who initiated divorce proceedings. Newt married Callista – the woman with whom he had the torrid affair, converted to Catholicism and today Newt and Callista have produced books and films promoting patriotic themes and educating young people.
Representative Mark Foley
Foley sent emails to underage male pages with explicit with horribly inappropriate suggested actions. Foley abruptly resigned and we never heard from him again. As it should be.
Senator David Vitter
Vitter was named as a client on a DC prostitution scandal in 2009. He acknowledged in a public statement that his number was included in the telephone records of an escort service run by Deborah Jeane Palfrey, the woman dubbed by the news media as the "D.C. Madam." In the statement, Vitter said the incident was "a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible. Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and from my wife in confession and marriage counseling." The phone records were dated before 2004, when Vitter was first elected to the Senate. Vitter was never charged with any crimes. Vitter is still in the Senate and still married.
Senator Larry Craig
Craig was arrested in a sting op for playing footsy with a cop in an airport bathroom stall. Craig later pled guilty to the charges and resigned. He has not sought public office since. He is still married to his wife of 30 years.
Mayor Rudy Guiliani
The Mayor of New York had an affair while he was married. He then divorced his wife and married his mistress Judith Nathan in 2003 – they are still married today.
Governor Mark Sanford
South Carolina Governor Sanford went to Argentina to see his mistress and planned to stay there for more than a week without notifying his staff. Sanford resigned in disgrace and repented. He is now divorced from his wife and engaged to his mistress. Sanford won a congressional race earlier his year.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
After leaving political office, it was discovered that blockbuster film star (married to liberal icon Maria Shriver) was caught in a scandal involving a love child – the mistress was the family housekeeper. Schwarzenegger had been funding the lives of his former mistress and son for years, including buying them a new home. The scandal resulted in Schwarzenegger’s divorce from his wife of 25 years. He has returned to movie-making and is out of public office.
Congressman Christopher Lee
The NY congressman was caught posing semi -nude soliciting sexual relationships on Craigslist. Lee immediately resigned and never heard from again.
The point of recounting these scandals is to look at the other side. Democrats tend to cling to their political positions of power, organize extensive cover-ups or resign and seek re-election later. Their marriages typically do not survive and rarely do they support or marry their former mistresses. The sleaze factor with Democrats is elevated – drugs, mysterious deaths and repeated illicit behavior seem to dog those Dems prone to sex scandals.
Ted Kennedy ran a car off the road while drunk driving with his mistress – an action that resulted in the slow death of a woman trapped in his car under water for hours, while he covered up the scandal. President Bill Clinton was impeached for lying under oath about his affair with an intern in the oval office. Al Gore sexually assaulted a massage therapist-Gore is divorced. Marion Barry was filmed in a hotel room smoking crack with a prostitute and is a DC councilman today after serving prison time. Gary Condit had an affair with an intern who was mysteriously murdered. Congressman Eric Massa assaulted male members of his staff. Barney Frank moved a gay male prostitute into his home. John Edwards had a love child while his wife was dying of cancer. Eliot Spitzer is seeking re-election after being caught spending at least $80,000 on prostitutes while he was Governor of New York –he resigned while his wife recently leaked her intention of leaving him. Anthony Weiner is embroiled in his latest online affair and refuses to abandon his re-election attempts despite the sleazy details.
Contrast these with their Republican counterpart scandals. Yes, Republicans had extra- marital affairs, but they tended to resign...and stay resigned and then MARRY their mistresses. (Although Schwarzenegger's marriage did not survive, however). Those Republicans who harassed others, were caught in a sting or appeared nude in photos resigned and were never heard from again - with the exception of David Vitter who repented and stayed in office.
All sex scandals leave voters feeling shaken and betrayed. Extra- marital affairs are a bad thing. But the bottom line is how you conduct yourself during the revelation and after matters. Damage control should not be more cover-ups, but repentance and respect of the public trust as well as care of the embarrased and emotionally bruised families involved.
