28 Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.
Even Germans found evidence that the reports of the power of prayer are scientifically sound. German psychologists at Saarland University and University of Mannheim found that praying helps people maintain self-control.
'A brief period of personal prayer buffered the self-control depletion effect', wrote the team, whose findings are published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology online.
Apparently people who pray to resist temptation have documented results that prayer works as a coping response and have with increased strength and ability to resist temptation. Praying has already been linked in the past to reduced levels of infidelity and alcohol consumption.
The German authors recruited 79 people, of whom 41 were Christian, 14 atheists, 10 agnostic and 14 belonged to other religions. Note that the prayer described was personal and individual - not the chanting types of prayer favored by Muslims, Hindis and Buddhists.
