Phil’s Offending Quotes from Interview with GQ Magazine:
“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”
“Everything is blurred on what’s right and what’s wrong. Sin becomes fine. Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.
From GLAAD’s Website:
The statement is far outside of the mainstream understanding of LGBT people. In Louisiana, which passed a constitutional amendment banning marriage equality, 56% of the population support some sort of legal recognition, marriage or civil unions, for gay and lesbian couples according to Public Policy Polling released in August 2013.
"Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil's lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe," said GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz. "He clearly knows nothing about gay people or the majority of Louisianans – and Americans - who support legal recognition for loving and committed gay and lesbian couples. Phil's decision to push vile and extreme stereotypes is a stain on A&E and his sponsors who now need to reexamine their ties to someone with such public disdain for LGBT people and families."
Interesting to note that Phil’s alluding to a common sex act performed between homosexual males (male-to-male anal sex) is considered to be “vile” and an “extreme stereotype” according to GLAAD. I suppose the truth hurts. Let’s see, homosexuals are not “different” because of skin color, they are different by the sexual acts they freely commit with the partners they choose to do it with. Why is it more offensive and vile for a straight man to speak about a homosexual act than it is for two men to actually do it?
"We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson's comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series 'Duck Dynasty' His personal views in no way reflect those of A&E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT communi ty. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely."
Oddly enough, A&E is willing to suspend their lead character on their #1 show (who happens to be the patriarch of the featured family who no doubt will follow him out the door) because, as a Southern Christian straight male, he quoted 1 Corinthians 6 about the sin of homosexuality? Like they had no idea that Phil MIGHT feel that way? They are shocked that other straight males agree with Phil who think sticking their unit into another man’s hairy, e coli-ridden sphincter might be LESS DESIRABLE than into a woman’s vagina? Is this shocking to gays? Really? A&E’s marketing tagline is “Be Original.” Is it original for A&E honchos to follow the politically correct police? Seems like a bad business decision for a cable network that only features other programming about storage in different states, reruns of CSI and home renovation. Perhaps A&E should side with their #1 audience instead of siding with the 1% of male gay activists who have never seen ‘Duck Dynasty.’ Otherwise the Robertson family may go on over to Glenn Beck’s network, The Blaze TV and leave A&E with ‘Bad Ink.’
GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz also responded:
“What’s clear is that such hateful anti-gay comments are unacceptable to fans, viewers, and networks alike. By taking quick action and removing Robertson from future filming, A&E has sent a strong message that discrimination is neither a Christian nor an American value."
Yes because GLAAD clearly understands what is a “Christian” or an “American” value.
