Shocker! President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto and his Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), who won control of Mexico’s government on July 1st, moved to dissolve the Agencia Federal de Investigación (AFI), the Mexican version of the FBI. Created in 2001, President Vicente Fox formed the law enfrocement agency to address Mexico’s pervasive police corruption. Today, the AFI is made up of about 5,000 members and with the training assistance of the United States, has performed well. The AFI has extradited several drug cartel leaders to the United States for criminal prosecution.
Peña Nieto, in the past weeks since his election, has been making nose about legalizing drugs citing that “things are not working”. Of course, the drug cartels grew on the PRI’s watch (more than 70 years as the ruling party of Mexico) who tended to ignore the cartels as long as officials were paid off and the violence was contained.
Up to 67,000 Mexican have been murdered by the drug cartels in the past couple of years and Pena Nieto's actions (much like his corrupt predecessor in his PRI party) combined with Obama's open U.S. southern border will have a significant impact on the U.S. border states’ crime rates as the cartels move their operations into the United States.
Smells like a deal between Peña Nieto and the cartels. Bet sales of assualt rifles go up in Texas.
