Houston's Mayor Parker Scoring Political Points on the Heels of Tragedy
Houston’s Sikh community (about 5,000 folks) held a candlelight ceremony to honor the victims of the Temple shooting in Wisconsin.
What is interesting is the Houston City Mayor Annise Parker pretended to host the event and black politicians Representatives Al Green and Sheila Jackson Lee elbowed their way into the vigil and into the Sikh community to capitalize on the horror. Mayor Parker, Reps Green and Jackson Lee are not Sikhs.
The Sikh murder is a tragedy and a despicable one – the whacko shooter went into a Sikh house of worship on a Sunday morning in a suburban town in Wisconsin and opened fire, killing 6.
But this shooting comes on the heels of another tragedy – the Aurora movie theater rampage where 12 were murdered and 58 wounded including a pregnant woman, a 6 year old girl, and a 3 month old baby. No candlelight vigil in Houston. No shouts of outrage from Sheila Jackson Lee. No Mayor of Houston hosting an event.
37 People were murdered in Chicago during the month of July – again no candlelight vigil, no politicians, no recognition.
Identity politics seeks to promote on group over another – at no point is it more pronounced than in our “acceptable” reaction to the murder of innocents – not all murders are equal? Where is the morality in that?
