Current TV, the unsuccessful cable network channel co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore with Joel Hyatt, has been acquired by Al Jazeera.
Al Jazeera plans to name the fledgling network Al Jazeera America and to begin broadcasting from New York in 2013.
The problem? Time Warner Cable did not and will not agree to carry the station. Time Warner pulled Current TV within hours after news of the cable channel's sale to Al Jazeera became official with an onscreen message: "This channel is no longer available on Time Warner Cable.”
Al Jazeera is funded by Qatar government and its billionaires and has been criticized for its glaring anti-Western views. The network has been banned in Saudi Arabia.
Last year, Glenn Beck’s The Blaze TV Network approached Current about buying the channel but Beck's offer was rejected because the Current wanted to continue to promote its progressive ideology.
Time Warner has viewership of about 12 million households which will no doubt impact the fledgling network.
