From Trailblazersblog at Dallas Morning News:
The Senate Judiciary Committee are voting on Senator Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) "assault weapons" ban that bans 157 semiautomatic guns with 10 or more rounds.
Texas leads the charge against the ridiculous bill that not only bans antique weapons, but any semi-auto gun with a grip, removing the right of citizens to legally own property they have owned for decades. Republican Senator John Cornyn and Freshman Texas Republican rising star Senator Ted Cruz will vote against the bill.
“This happens often in Congress and in Washington where symbolism tends to play better than substance and the sense is that you have to do something,” Cornyn said during a weekly call Wednesday with Texas reporters, referencing studies funded by the Department of Justice that noted the previous assault weapons ban – in place from 1994 to 2004 – did little to curb gun violence. The something we could do that would actually have an impact would be to improve the mental health reporting for the background check program, which I certainly support. “I have a hard time seeing why passing new laws that will be either unenforced or ineffective makes America or Texans any safer.” ~ Senator John Cornyn (R-TX).
Cruz has also vociferously lead opposition to the bill stating that liberals have been "wrong, cynical and misguided" in the exploitation of the shooting at Newtown, Conn. Cruz has gone on record during a hearing for the bill stating that the legislation is misguided policy "needlessly restricting the constitutional rights" of American citizens.
