“Sen. McConnell supports the House Republicans’ bill and will not vote to block it, since it defunds Obamacare and funds the government without increasing spending by a penny. He will also vote against any amendment that attempts to add Obamacare funding back into the House Republicans’ bill,” stated Don Stewart, a spokesman for the Republican senator.
Senator John Cornyn (TX) has followed Senator McConnell in opposing tactics spearheaded by Senators Ted Cruz (TX) and Mike Lee (UT).
Senator Cruz leads a filibuster all night against the Affordable Care Act. Cruz, Lee and the Merry Band of 14 Senators who oppose a procedural vote in the House bill before Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) plans to strip out the Obamacare defunding provision by a majority vote. This Texas showdown is epic – the freshman young upstart who won a senate
Sen. Cornyn this morning appearing on the Ed Hendee Show at KSEV radio said this about Sen. Cruz’s all night filibuster: “Great for all the insomniacs.” And Cornyn said, “I admire his passion. “
Cornyn told Hendee that the formal vote will begin today at 1:00 p.m. on the House bill. Cornyn wants everyone on record first. Cornyn reiterated that he voted against Obamacare from the beginning and that he has voted to repeal the ACA at every opportunity. Cornyn said he was focused on the Red State Democrats who are up for re-election.
Cornyn said the cloture vote on the bill won’t help because GOP has no Senate majority and it won’t stop Reid. He called the ACA bill a “train wreck”.
Cornyn’s obvious priority is to “set us up for 2014,” and that he does not think “government shutdown is in our best interests.” Cornyn wants to keep the focus on President and his failed policies.
As the #2 whip in the party, Cornyn’s stated goal is to define the party’s position on Obamacare and force the Democrats to own it in 2014.
Cornyn said he was concerned about Obama’s trump card - signing the bill. But he believes the President will be sensitive to liberal opposition. Cornyn believes there is bipartisan support for a future delay citing union opposition.
Cornyn claimed that his job as the whip is to count votes to “know where the troops are” and that too much has been made about a feud with Ted Cruz calling it a “disagreement in the family about tactics.”
