The New York Times has stretched a rational man’s willing suspension of disbelief claiming that the Russian President’s proposal for embattled Syrian dictator Assad to give up his stockpile of chemical weapons is part of Obama’s struggle…with Republicans.
Despite bipartisan and nearly universal opposition to military action in Syria, the NYT claims, “In effect, Mr. Obama is now caught between trying to work out a deal with Mr. Putin, with whom he has been feuding lately, or trying to win over Republicans in the House who have made it their mission to block his agenda.”
The NYT tries to revise history feigning that Obama’s vacillations are as a result of trying to win over Republicans? Republicans with whom he refuses to speak to or meet? The NYT ignores the fact that Obama has been backtracking on his arbitrarily-created red lines since he first declared Syria’s use of chemical weapons as a “red line for us” back in August. While Obama burbled about “international norms” Syria went on about its business, and the world gaped in horror at Obama’s weakness.
The NYT continued to try and prop up Obama, portraying him as the victim of forces beyond his control. “The Republicans are forcing Obama to have to trust Putin.”
Forget the fact that Obama has painted himself into this corner – with little help from his own administration and no help from Republicans. Even the NYT grudgingly admitted that his predicament is “partly of his own making” even though the Times reporter offers no proof of any other part attributable to the Republicans.
It has been widely reported over and over again that Obama’s decision to go to Congress in the first place in order to put Syrian military action to a vote was made by the man himself – contrary to the advice and opinion of Obama’s own staff. The only noise made by Republicans in this entire clusterf*ck masquerading as foreign policy was Senator McCain running around the globe defending the Syrian rebels - even offering to have a senatorial sleep over with the Sunni guerillas who were holed up in a cave in Syria.
Today, Obama is, for all practical purposes, Putin’s puppet – and Putin is no doubt loving the fact that he could exact his revenge for the Libya scenario and seize Obama by the proverbial short hairs. Guess that’ll teach Obama never to go back to Russia and campaign for gay rights.
Russia simply took Kerry’s gaffe and ran with it, seizing an opportunity to make a power play that worked – both Putin and Assad out-maneuvered Obama. The end result will be months of dithering about counting and collecting chemical weapons, Assad will stay in power and Americans just might begin referring to each other as “comrade.”
