Houston City Hall Decorated with Rainbow Colors
Houston’s Lesbian Mayor Annise Parker decreed that the City of Houston will offer same sex couples benefits provided that they are “legally married.”
The problem is that Texas does not recognize same sex unions as legal marriages. But this decree does screw the local taxpayer. Parker ignored the fact that city workers’ salaries and benefits are paid by taxpayers. Any legal challenges that will result in this absurd mayoral fiat that will cost the city thousands more to litigate - at taxpayers' expense.
The other problem is that this is purely a cynical political move by the gay Mayor – again with taxpayers footing the bill. Mayor Parker is challenging the position that Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott reflected in his opinion issued earlier this year. The opinion said local governments (and school districts) that offer same-sex domestic partner benefits are violating the Texas state constitution. Abbott, the leading candidate in the Texas Governor’s race is unabashedly conservative, and Parker is no doubt confronting Abbott’s opinion, hoping for a legal battle.
So far, Mayor Parker’s gay agenda has cost the taxpayer thousands, beginning with recruiting her LGBT enviro-acitivist buddy from San Francisco, Laura Spanjian, and creating a new position for her as Director of Sustainability with a salary more than $120,000 per year. Her first public initiative? Put a farmer’s market in front of City Hall.
So far Mayor Parker's gay agenda is costing Houston taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.
Mayor McSensible Shoes strikes again.
