It’s 2013 and Peyton Manning seems to get better and better.  He is #1 ranked passer -  leading in yards passed, touchdowns thrown and a 75% completion rating. No interceptions so far.  His Quarterback Rating is 138 (past the perfect score of 126).

• Peyton's father was legendary quarterback Archie Manning who was not only drafted by the NFL but was also offered a spot in professional baseball – with the Atlanta Braves.
• Peyton’s mama was Homecoming Queen at Ole Miss in 1970.
• Peyton weighed in at over 12 pounds at birth.
• Peyton is actually a middle child.
• Peyton grew up in a home built in 1853 in New Orleans.

The most dangerous “sport” for women? You guessed it – cheerleading. No it’s not all push-up bras and psychological stress because the quarterback dumped you. There’s more.

According to the Telegraph: Researchers found that the number of visits to casualty resulting from high school and college cheerleading injuries rose from 4,954 in 1980 to 26,786 in 2007.

And cheerleading results in more catastrophic injuries to girls than ANY OTHER SPORT – 66% of permanent disability is caused by cheerleading including head (concussions) and spinal injuries.

Apparently the majority of the injuries were caused to the cheerleader catcher.

At last night’s NFL season opener between the Broncos and the Ravens, Broncos LB Danny Trevathan picked off a Joe Flacco pass and ran toward the end zone (solo) for a no-brainer pick-6, but decided to dance, showboat and like a fool, accidentally dropping the ball at the 2 yard line. The Ravens got the ball back at their own 20 yard line with a touchback, cutting Denver’s possible lead with more than 10 minutes remaining.

Meanwhile, The National Football League (NFL) supposedly put players on notice they will crack down on any expression of excessive celebration and enforce unsportsmanlike conduct penalties already detailed in the pages of the NFL rule book. The NFL rulebook states that a team will be penalized a loss of 15 yards if a player commits these acts. The NFL then walked it back, is attempting to minimize their “excessive enforcement” by stating that infractions will not be enforced following touchdowns as long as the players are not taunting.

Texans J.J. Watt took to Twitter to explain his antics on the field: "I do my salute as a sign of respect and appreciation for the military and I think it's kind of a bad deal they're going to take away something that I'm trying to show respect to the people who protect this country and freedom to the game and who allow us to play this game. If it wasn't for the men and women overseas protecting us I wouldn't be able to play football. The NFL gives us gloves that say salute the service I can't even salute to the service because they don't let me. Something needs to be done about that. I think it's a bad deal. I don't have a plan yet. I'm prepared to pay some fines if I need to because I'm not going to stop respecting our military."

Despite Watt’s good intentions, the reality is that fans are subjected to dancing after tackles, salutes, taunting opponents. Games are delayed. Points are lost. Players making easy tackles stand over their opponents in cheesy conquest poses. Gone are the days when the mantra was  “act like you have been there/done that before…and you expect to get there again.”

The median salary in the NFL is $770,000 and climbing. One would think that the salary and benefits are enough for the players to do their job. Of course, black players are notorious for this type of behavior and many African-Americans actually believe the NFL’s crackdown is tantamount to an assault on “black expression.”  No, showboating is a blatant example of a singular mentality - the narcissistic “look at me” ambition that overrides the team’s goals.

The 2012 NFL official playing rules listed examples of taunting, saying, “These acts include but are not limited to: sack dances; home run swing; incredible hulk; spiking the ball; throwing or shoving the ball; pointing; pointing the ball; verbal taunting; military salute; standing over an opponent (prolonged and with provocation); or dancing.”

Homer Jones, a wide receiver for the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns (1964-1970) was credited as the first player to spike the ball in the end zone after scoring a touchdown in 1965- unheard of in a professional game where players were expected to carry on without calling attention to themselves. Who can forget the endzone antics of Billy “White Shoes” Johnson and Neon Deion Sanders?

While most realize that sports like football are a big money form of entertainment...cheerleaders behave like strippers, football players act like divas – all part of the game – right? For every quiet leader like Brian Waters, Darren Sproles, Israel Idonije, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning, the media attention goes to the grandstanding likes of Chad OchoCinco, Plaxico Burris, Terrell Owens and Aaron Hernandez. The childish rebellion against a code of conduct and sportsman- like behavior may be en vogue – but it does a disservice to teams who promote it and to the fans of the NFL. As in many avenues of our culture today, adolescent male behavior is the rule rather than the exception.

Four former Vanderbilt football players have been indicted on five counts of aggravated rape each of an unconscious 21-year-old student at a campus dormitory in June.

Safety Cory Batey, 19 of Nashville, Tenn.(redshirted last season); defensive back Brandon Banks, 19, of Brandywine, Md.(redshirted last season); receiver Jaborian "Tip" McKenzie, 19, of Woodville, Miss.; and tight end Brandon Vandenburg, 20, of Indio, Calif. also have been charged with two counts of aggravated sexual battery for an incident tipped to campus officials by surveillance video. Vandenburg also is charged with one count of tampering with evidence and one count of unlawful photography.

According to Nashville police, the four men are charged with raping the unconscious woman inside Vandenburg's room at Gillette House dormitory early on June 23. University officials checking the dorm's surveillance in the hallways on an unrelated matter noticed the four's behavior and notified the Vanderbilt University Police Department the night of June 25. Campus police contacted Nashville's sex crimes unit June 26.

While the players were indicted Friday, the district attorney general said the investigation is not yet completed and that others may be involved.

Vanderbilt dismissed the players June 29 and barred them from the campus pending the investigation. Vice chancellor Beth Fortune said Friday that their first thoughts are for the victim, a Vanderbilt student, and that the university will continue to offer her all of its services and support.

We are proud of the collective accomplishments of our student athletes over many years and we expect the highest standard of conduct from them. It is a privilege, not a right, to represent Vanderbilt as a student athlete, and when our standards of conduct are not met, we will hold our student athletes accountable. The charges brought today against the four former Vanderbilt football players allege conduct which is abhorrent and will never be tolerated. We will review our athletics program to be sure that it, like all other programs at the university, reflects our culture of community and respect for others and that our student athletes are held to the same high standards of conduct as all our students

The Commodores were 9-4 last year and the 2013 season  opener will be August 29^th  hosting Mississippi.

 

Manziel's Potential NCAA Rules Violations Highlight How Stupid the Rules Are

“I think consumers are probably more aware than ever before of the amounts of money that are being funneled through the system. Every stakeholder in the model has benefited to a much greater degree than the players have.” said Paul Swangard, managing director of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon.

 

The NCAA is pissing me off. I agree with the lawsuits  filed by former and current college athletes against the NCAA for a portion of the billions of dollars that it (and the  member conferences) take in every year.  Meanwhile NCAA rules prohibit athletes from receiving any compensation beyond tuition, room and board. The NCAA makes billions, the schools make millions and the players get stiffed to keep their motivations ‘pure”? Whatever.

ESPN reported  that the NCAA is investigating Heisman Trophy winner  and quarterback for Texas A&M Johnny Manziel for allegedly accepting a five-figure flat fee for signing autographs. Manziel could be suspended from play. A&M could be in the position (if they let Manziel play) of having their record of wins expunged.

While millions goes into promoting the Heisman Trophy (and its winner) and millions in profits go to the school, the conference, the NCAA and its sponsors, Manziel received a  $20,782 scholarship covering the total cost of attendance for an in-state student at Texas A&M during the 2011-2012 school year.

Manziel’s family  was forced to HIRE a lawyer to legally protect his nickname (“Johnny Football”) to thwart exploitation of Johnny’s fame  with outsiders profiting from T shirts, hats and memorabilia  that use his name and likeness.

In general, players take time to go to autograph signing days, fans then sell the memorabilia on Ebay, and the hyprocrisy is staggering.

Perhaps if compensation rules were loosened, players would delay their rush out of college to the NFL.

 “What this contradiction highlights is the hypocrisy of the NCAA and the abuse of its rules to exploit and punish athletes,” said Michael Hausfeld, lead attorney for the lawsuit of a former UCLA basketball player.

Poor  former Patriot’s tight end, Aaron Hernandez. Not only was he charged with the murder of Odin Lloyd, whose body was found in an industrial park area less than a mile from Hernandez's home, but now he is being investigated for a double murder, too. 

Hernandez was released by the Patriots after his arrest Wednesday even though he  pleaded not guilty.

Although he has been praised as a “model inmate” (after spending an awe-inspiring 24 hours in the jail's medical unit), Hernandez is apparently unhappy.

1)      It is difficult going from having thousands of people cheering for him to being "just a number."

2)      He wants bail so he can spend time at home with his finacee and baby

3)      The mean police are now investigating Hernandez for a double murder in Boston in 2012.

Serial killers just can’t catch a break anymore. Oh well…there is always the book deal. 

 

New England Pats Sign Tebow

The New England Patriots signed Tim Tebow- no contract details yet.

After a spotty NFL career – being dumped by the Broncos and his failed mission with the New York Jets, Tebow gets to return to the NFL and prove he has the right stuff. This is a good move for Tebow – the Pats are known to have the ability and organization to develop a player over time. No doubt the Pats may be looking at Tebow for other positions rather than QB – possibly tight end. There is no chance Tebow will replace Tom Brady unlike the strange situation with Mark Sanchez during his tenure with the Jets.

Tebow will most likely mature under the strict Pats organization – there will be no press conferences for Tebow – Belichick controls his players’ access to media with an iron fist.

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is said to be a fan of Tebow as he was Denver’s Head Coach when he traded into the first round of the 2010 draft to take Heisman Trophy winner Tebow with the 25th pick.

Never one to miss an opportunity to push his wussified metrosexual moonbat agenda, President Obama mused on the future of the NFL because of its violence and said he’d have to think “long and hard” about letting his hypothetical son play football. I guess this is the son who looks like Trayvon and his hypothetical mother is Obama’s composite girlfriend?

I think that those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence. In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won’t have to examine our consciences quite as much.” ~President Obama to New Republic

Meanwhile hardcore NFL  head coaches Jim and John Harbaugh who face each other in the upcoming Superbowl had this to say:

 “I have a 4-month old, almost 5-month old son, Jack Harbaugh, and if President Obama feels that way, then there will be a little bit less competition for Jack Harbaugh when he gets old. It’s still early. Like I said, Jack is only 5 months old. He is a really big kid. He has an enormous head. We don’t have a 40 time on him yet, but his wingspan is plus one, and as soon as he grows into that head he is going to be something. Shhh...Don't Tell the Media, But a Christian Business Leader Did the Right Thing

Most times the news focuses on the mistakes and sins of Christian leaders.  Today’s media loves nothing more than the fall from grace of a “good person”  - a public violation of sex or character standard involving a Christian business leader, politician or pastor.

But the reality is that every day, a Christian leader, politician or pastor does the right thing. Many times and without publicity, that person makes the moral decision to extend grace to someone who has wronged them, to stand against what is popular in favor of what is morally courageous, and to help someone anonymously, expecting nothing in return.

Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy is just that type of leader who regularly uses what is whispered in many Christian circles, the “law of attraction.”  Cathy believes that actions speak louder than words and by all accounts, runs his company and conducts himself in a manner bespeaking the  kindness, concern and care for others. Practicing the same moral code that he preaches.

The story of Dan Cathy’s latest demonstration of good will comes from a witness who most believe has every reason to hate Cathy,  written in a story buried on  the yahoo news website in the political section under a headline, Chick-fil-A CEO, Gay Activist Meet

What has occurred is indeed miraculous. The leader of a national gay-rights group says he's coming out-as a friend of Cathy’s:  "I've gotten to know Dan; he's gotten to know me. He's shared concerns about young people, about Chick-fil-A being used for certain purposes," said Shane Windmeyer, executive director of Campus Pride, told ABC News.

Last year, Cathy sparked a national controversy and a call for a nationwide boycott of Chick-fil-A’s restaurants by outraged gay activists and liberal elitists, after Cathy expressed his specifying religious views on the sanctity of marriage in a radio interview: "We're inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage. And I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude that thinks we have the audacity to redefine what marriage is all about."

Cathy could have stuck to his guns, back tracked or ignored the firestorm of publicity. Instead Cathy did the right thing, behind the scenes. Shane Windmeyer said that Cathy called him in the midst of the controversy to garner advice and understanding of the position of the “other side,” and to seek compromise. What? An intolerant gay-bashing Christian holding out the proverbial olive branch and seeking to compromise?

Windmeyer said Chick-fil-A has stopped donating to anti-gay groups in September of 2011. Windmeyer says that while he and Cathy continue to disagree about the sanctity of marriage they have reached an understanding of each other as people.

"If my husband and I ever get the right to marry in North Carolina, I'll include Dan Cathy on the guest list," he told ABC News.
